3 Ways to Keep Skunks Off Your Property

If there’s one animal that all home and business owners dislike having on their property, it’s skunks.  Not only can these pesky critters give off a harsh odor, but they are known to be creative scavengers that can get into trash, gardens, pet and bird food and more that can start off as a small disturbance and become a big problem down the road.

In this blog we will discuss a few things you can do as a property owner to keep skunks off your property for good.

Secure Food, Keep Trash Out of Reach

While skunks are known to eat a wide range of things from nature that include insects, larvae, earthworms and rodents, they are also known to scavenge through human garbage when they are in a pinch.

When you leave your garbage cans unsecured, skunks have an uncanny ability to work their way in and create a big mess on your property. Make sure to have garbage cans that lock into place at the tops or place bungee cords on each handle, reaching over the lid, to keep things closed.

Skunks are also known to eat pet food, especially cat food, so it’s important to keep this food indoors at night as well.

Protect Your Garden

Skunks are omnivorous, eating both plant and animal material, which can create problems for those with home gardens.

If you have a garden at your home or business, it is suggested to place a low fence around your crops to keep skunks at bay. Skunks will not be able to climb over these, but they do have a keen ability to dig under fences, so make sure the fence is buried several inches in the ground.

As an added tip, you can place chili or cayenne pepper around the fence to keep the skunks away as well.

Consider motion activated lights

As most of us know, skunks typically come out at night and are comfortable roaming and foraging in the dark.

When you add motion activated lights around your property it can go a long way in startling these critters, having them exit your property for good.

Should you be interested in making an investment in motion activated lights, consider flood lights for the very best results.
