Should you have an issue with racoons on your property and are looking for ways to keep them away for good, there are a few easy tips you can follow that include securing your food waste/bird and pet food, keeping a clean property and more.
When you follow these few tips, you will help ensure that these dangerous creatures that carry rabies and other pathogens are kept at bay before they enter your home and cause even further damage.
Secure your trash cans
Nothing helps a raccoon population flourish like garbage. When you leave your garbage bags in outdoor containers that are not properly sealed, racoons will be able to find their way into them and get to all of the “goodies” they’ve been searching for.
You can properly secure your trash outdoors by having a lid that clips into place, bungee cords to hold the lid on the garbage basket or by simply placing your trash bags in a closed shed or garage until garbage day.
Keep pet and bird food out of reach
Another tip for keeping racoons off of your property is to keep pet food and bird food away from areas racoons can get access to.
If you have food in a bird feeder or pet food in bowls outdoors during the day, you should bring them indoors each night to keep these pesky racoons from hanging around your property when the sun goes down.
Keep a clean lawn
While it is certainly important to keep all trash and food away from racoons, it is equally important to keep a clean lawn and property.
When you have an unkept lawn that is full of weeds and brush, racoons will have a place to scurry and hide when they are spotted by you or your pets. When you keep a clean lawn by mowing and clearing brush on a regular basis, the racoons will have nowhere to hide other than away from your property.
