Why Raccoons are a Problem in the Summer

If you’ve ever had an issue with raccoons finding their way onto your property looking for food, there’s a good chance it’s happened during the summer months. If you haven’t had any run ins with these pests, you should stay vigilant during this time as this is when you’re most likely to have a problem. There are several reasons for this:

They’re Not Very Active in Winter

Raccoons do not hibernate in the tradition sense, but they are not particularly active during the winter months. They tend to rest in burrows over the course of the cold-weather months, sleeping and waiting until things warm up. And when that temperature rises, they’ll be back out in full force.

They Add Reinforcements

Raccoons tend to give birth in the spring and then wean the baby after about two months. That means these young raccoons begin to hunt and forage for food. If the raccoon’s family had a nest near or in your home in the past, the baby may return to it at some point. This is why it’s so important to have any pest problem taken care of as soon as possible.

They’re Nocturnal

In the summer months, the days are longer, and we tend to spend more time outside. But because they sleep all day, raccoons can wait us out. With excellent vision, they can see in the dark as well as they do in the light.

They Load Up on Food

Near the end of summer, raccoons begin to prepare for a long winter by eating as much as possible. As omnivores, they eat insects, small animals such as rodents and plants. The closer fall draws near, the more they have to bulk up with extra layers of fat. Often, that will mean trying to break into your garbage cans to eat your trash.
